The real problem was the show not letting anything breathe and being too quick to rush to the next thing. But that should have been an emotional moment. Did he go a little overboard with the "some of us don't have our fathers anymore" part? Sure. People killed JR for his bummer call when the Gunn Club turned on Billy - but he had exactly the right idea. JR's call of Christian's heel turn (with an assist from Schiavone) was perfect and made that moment better. For all his technical mastery, Excalibur doesn't have that skill yet. #JR KAMENOKO STA. HOW TO#And it's one area where AEW's broadcasts are sometimes lacking (although Schiavone certainly knows how to do it too). whatever it is, he sells the hell out of it. That feeling might be outrage, joy, sadness, frustration, anticipation, worry. For all his slip-ups, JR is still absolutely the best at one very important thing: Understanding how to make the audience feel the moment. My roommates and I for years quoted one time when JR was calling a Kane match and said, emphatically, "Kane is methodical. Which is fine because he's a freaking PRO WRESTLING ANNOUNCER, and part of the reason people watch pro wrestling is that it's absurd. Even at his sharpest, JR would have little verbal flubs. People take the commentary way too seriously. I'm glad you posted this, as I was just thinking about it. ![]()
